About Huntington’s Disease and HelpCureHD.org

Huntington’s Disease is a hereditary brain disorder with no known cure. Over 30,000 people are suffering from Huntington’s Disease in the United States alone. The disease causes a deterioration in nerve cells, making it difficult to complete everyday tasks- walking becomes difficult, cognition slows, and the individual becomes completely unable to care for themselves.

The HelpCureHD Foundation was created to help those suffering from this neurological disorder as well as helping aid in the journey to finding a cure. HelpCureHD was inspired by Lee Smith, who was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease in 2012 and passed in the summer of 2020.

Major League Baseball Pitcher Joe Smith and Sports Reporter Allie LaForce spearheaded this incredible foundation (in honor and now loving memory of Joe’s mom, Lee) in the effort to help remove Huntington’s Disease from the world. The HD gene is detectable in an embryo through the process of IVF. Now that I have personally met one of these beautiful HD-free babies (whose father has Huntington’s Disease), I’ve seen with my own eyes how incredibly amazing this process is for families affected by this hereditary nightmare.
